Mailsmith

Welcome to the website of the craftsman who manufactures the most accurate mail armour reproductions available anywhere in the world today. The images below represent only a small fraction of the styles of historical mail that I can create for you.

Roman

LoricaHamata Squamataque

The LHS is considered a hybrid armour as it was composed of both mail and scales. It can be thought of in one of two ways; as a simple hamata (mail shirt) with an outer covering of scales woven into it, or as a squamata (scale shirt) with a mail backing as opposed to the customary textile backing.

This scales and mail links of this armour could be manufactured out of either a cupric alloy, or from iron. Once these were created the armour itself could be constructed used either one metal alone, or with a combination of each such as iron links with cupric alloy scales. This is the combination that seems to have been used on the LHS example in the Römisches Museum in Augsburg, Germany.

In any event it is one of the most intriguing forms of mail armour ever created.

Lorica Hamata

This hamata reconstruction was crafted using information gathered from an inspection of the mail bits housed in the Castle Museum in Colchester, UK.
